Getting used to running with tides again. Today is our first “Real Day” of cruising. We’re off to Des Moines WA for Fuel. Should take about 5 hrs.

Took 3hrs to put in 150gal. They gave us a free night because their pump was so slow. $3.04/gal

Found a drop in replacement at a chandlery in Poulsbo with 177 hrs. I got it for twenty bucks after challenging the guy to figure out what positions for the 8 dip switches on the back off the tach. There are 256 combinations. I renewed my subscription to boatdiesel and found some hints there. Got it to work by trial and error. I kept a log for the first twenty hours to make sure it was logging hours correctly…good to go and period correct! The original trim ring even fits.

CONDITION AND VALUATION SURVEY 11/15/17

PRIORITY FINDINGS & RECOMMENDATIONS

1. There are no ground fault circuit interrupt protected outlets on board.

Recommendation: The current voluntary ABYC E-11 standards indicate that 115VAC outlets in the galley, head, machinery spaces or in exterior locations should have ground fault circuit interrupt (GFCI) protection.

Repair made: Replaced receptacle in head and galley

2. The stainless steel rudder has significant crevice corrosion. This may be due to inferior stainless steel or periods with a lack of sacrificial anode protection.

Recommendation: Remove the rudder and rudder post so that the rudder post can be checked for corrosion. Replace the rudder, or at minimum, have the damaged areas of the structural welds from post to blade and between the two blade sections re-welded.

Maintaining moisture barrier epoxy coatings on the rudder would help reduce corrosion. And it is critical that the sacrificial anodes be maintained to help preserve.

Repairs made: Put a new bead on all the welds. Put a new zinc on the rudder. Pulled cleaned and replaced post with a Delrin rudder bearing on the bottom end. All new fasteners.

3. The rudder post packing gland has corroded hose clamps. See photo below.
Recommendation: Replace these clamps with quality all-stainless steel units.
