About the Owners Past and Present

From Joe Mehrkens, June 2023
Our Alaska dream has come to a good end. The Perseverance was sold this June to Diane Meador and Harry Green Jr – a Juneau couple with years of sailing experience in Southeast Alaska. I started my first summer in Alaska on the MV Sultanna (a 65’ Executive Tug built in the 1930s) and the MV Chugach (a 55’ Forest Service, Ranger Boat built in the 1920s). It would not be until 1982 that Helen and I bought our first tug the Yewbetu (a 30’ Sundowner), which we lost in the 1984 Thanksgiving Storm. Buying the Perseverance, a year later at the Seattle Boat Show was a natural. It was a good time to own a slow boat in Southeast Alaska, where many times you could have an entire bay to yourself. There were family trips that my siblings still remind me were trips of a lifetime. Decades of salmon, halibut, and crab. And of course, ownership has had its challenges and adventures. There are no mixed feelings about passing on the adventures to Diane and Harry. Enjoy!! Joe Mehrkens 37VT32.
